The Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust of Ngamba Island is located 23km off the shores of Lake Victoria from Entebbe. Ngamba Island is almost 100 acres in size and hosts over 50 different types of vegetation that Chimps eat in addition to the supplementary feeding provided by the sanctuary. The island is a safe home for rescued orphaned chimpanzees. It’s in record that chimpanzees are our closest relatives sharing about 98.5% of man’s DNA. Ngamba Island is home to 49 rescued Chimpanzee.
The Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary safari is one of the shortest chimpanzee trekking safaris in Uganda. Tracking chimpanzees is so rewarding since it provides a great adventure experience of meeting our closest relatives who share 98% of the DNA with the human beings. Ngamba island is a designated destination for rescuing the endangered chimps, including orphans, those neglected by mothers, rescued from poachers, etc. A visit to this sanctuary is an indirect support to the rescue of these endangered apes, and all proceeds from tours made go to fund the activities of the sanctuary. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary offers a unique opportunity for close viewing of chimpanzees in their natural shelter. Pre-arranged supplementary feeding times which are 11.00 am & 3.00 pm every day tend to bring the chimpanzees to within meters of the raised walkway specially designed for easy viewing and provide excellent photographic opportunities.
Ngamba Island is set 25km southwest of Entebbe in the Lake Victoria, in North area of central Uganda. The journey to Ngamba Island starts from Entebbe Water Front Beach Pier and the journey takes 45 minutes. During this journey, remarkably you will cross the Equator enroute, you will be able to view a wider spectrum of beautiful scenes. On arrival at the Island which is an orphanage of up to 49 chimpanzees, you will be given an introduction and briefing on the sanctuary.
Apart from chimpanzees, Ngamba Island is home to very many plant and tree species, forest birds, water catchment areas, reptile species like the snakes, lizards and the beautiful scenery which is so adventurous on any safari. It’s also exciting to watch the chimpanzees interact with each other and with their care takers. In the relatively shortest time at this island, you will be able to see such different habits amongst the group; with some whistling for food where as others clapping.
